Do you even squat, bro?

Japan may have the fancy toilets that have heated seats and douches built in, but majority of toilets are still Asian squatting style. These may be intimidating to use, but studies have shown that squatting toilets helps prevent fecal stagnation (prime factor in colon cancer, appendicitis and IBS) and hemorrhoids, also it makes elimination faster and easier.

Speaking to some of my fellow classmates, I realized the reasons why they are avoiding this type of toilet is not only because it is scary to use, but also because they do not know how to squat properly.

Squatting is really only something that is done at the gym for Americans. Actually, people avoid it at all costs. But in Asia, it is their way of sitting on the ground.

Look at these perfect squats.

Many people do not practice the correct form and it is time to correct that. Babies are great at squatting, so let us go learn from these wise little guys and do it properly!

There are many benefits including toned legs, increased flexibility, strengthened core, etc. So don't forget to do your squats!

Even if you are a pro already, these toilets are still pretty hard to get used to. So, here are some helpful tips to using these kinds of toilets.

  • Squat down with your heels flat on the ground over the bowl. Keep your feet flat or you will fall over!
    • Pull down your pants down around the ankle, but make sure you do not let them drop too far such that they make contact with the toilet. If you need, hold your pants forward and away from the drop zone. And if you really need to, remove your pants entirely.

Do not be intimidated by these kinds of toilets.  If anything, try to use it as often as possible!

And remember, friends do not let friends skip leg day. Keep squatting my friends.
